Visiting Giresun: Discovering Kuzalan Waterfall, Mavi Göl & Göksu Travertenleri

I was able to finally make way back to Giresun, a beautiful city on Türkiye’s Black Sea coast. With my original roots being from here, I had missed the green mountains, fresh air, and friendly people — but nothing compares to seeing it for yourself. My goal was to escape the noise of the city and spend the day in nature, so I headed to Dereli, a district famous for Kuzalan Waterfall, Mavi Göl, and Göksu Travertenleri.

First Stop: Kuzalan Waterfall

Kuzalan Waterfall

Driving through the winding mountain roads toward Dereli was an experience in itself — every turn revealed another postcard-perfect view. When I arrived at Kuzalan Şelalesi, I could hear the sound of the water before I even saw it. Surrounded by lush green forest, the waterfall felt peaceful and refreshing. I took a slow walk along the paths, stopping often to take photos and just breathe in the cool, clean air. The tickets to enter were 60 Liras which is a little over a single dollar(USD) with the current exchange rate. Best is, you can use the ticket you purchase here at Mavi Göl which is only a few minutes up the road.

The Magical Mavi Göl

A short drive later, I reached Mavi Göl (Blue Lake), and I have to say — the name does not lie. The water was the most stunning shade of turquoise I’ve ever seen, thanks to the minerals in the rocks. Swimming isn’t allowed to protect the lake, but I didn’t mind at all. I sat on a bench and just watched the sunlight dance on the water while the sound of the nearby stream filled the air.

My experience here was pretty interesting. When you walk down to where the main lake is, there will be a lot of people taking pictures and crowding the areas. You can walk past them by using the pathway into the forest where you will find more views of the river. I was actually able to get my feet in the water and get way better pictures without having the visitors in my frame. If you stopped and purchased a ticket at Kuzalan, remember, your tickets are valid for entry here as well without needing to purchase a new ticket.

Göksu Travertenleri – A Hidden Pamukkale

Next was Göksu Travertenleri, a place I had seen in photos but couldn’t believe was real until I stood there myself. The white calcium terraces and blue pools looked like something from another world. It reminded me of Pamukkale, but without the crowds. I spent a good hour just walking around, taking photos, and enjoying the quiet.

My family loved it here as well. The water was really cold in some parts and really warm in other parts. As you calked down the Travertens, the view keeps getting better and better.

A Day I’ll Never Forget

By the time I headed back to Giresun city, the sun was setting over the mountains. The entire day felt like a peaceful escape — fresh mountain air, stunning landscapes, and a reminder that Türkiye’s Black Sea region is full of hidden gems.

If you ever find yourself in Giresun, make sure to visit Kuzalan Waterfall, Mavi Göl, and Göksu Travertenleri. Trust me, you’ll come back with beautiful photos and even better memories.
