Cennet ve Cehennem Caves: Exploring the Mystical Sinkholes of Mersin

During our trip to Mersin, one of the highlights was visiting Cennet ve Cehennem—literally “Heaven and Hell,” two massive natural sinkholes rich in history, mythology, and stunning scenery. Located near Silifke, these sites offer a fascinating glimpse into Turkey’s ancient past and dramatic landscape.

Cennet (Heaven) is the more accessible of the two. You descend a long staircase into a lush, green sinkhole filled with vegetation and cool shade. At the bottom, you’ll find a small, historic chapel dating back to the 5th century, adding a spiritual dimension to the natural wonder. Walking around, the calm atmosphere makes it easy to imagine the myths and legends tied to the place.

On the other side is Cehennem (Hell)—a much deeper and narrower pit that’s too steep to enter safely but spectacular to view from above. According to local legend and ancient Greek mythology, this was the prison of the monstrous Typhon, locked away by Zeus himself. The sheer scale and dramatic drop of Cehennem make it a sight to remember.

The contrasting features of Cennet and Cehennem—the inviting greenery of the first and the imposing depths of the second—create a powerful experience that blends natural beauty with rich cultural stories.

If you’re visiting Mersin or the Mediterranean coast, don’t miss the chance to explore these two extraordinary sinkholes. They’re perfect for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone intrigued by myths and legends.
